How to transfer to Deakin

Check your eligibility
Once you’ve decided on the course you want to transfer to, check the entry requirements on the course page to make sure you’re eligible to apply.Check key dates
Depending on your course, you could start in March (Trimester 1), July (Trimester 2) or November (Trimester 3). Check the course page for available intakes, application closing dates and key study periods.Prepare your supporting documents
When applying for recognition of prior learning (RPL), you’ll need an academic transcript from your previous education provider, along with:- details of your previous course structure and credit point weightings
- relevant unit outlines or syllabuses, including assessment requirements, credit point weightings, textbooks and references.
Depending on your course, you may also need to provide proof of citizenship, evidence of professional experience, a personal statement, resume or portfolio. Check entry requirements on the course page for exactly what you’ll need.
Start your application
The easiest way to apply is through our online Deakin Application Portal. Once you’ve created an account, you’ll be prompted to let us know if you’re applying for RPL. You can elect to have your RPL application assessed one of two ways:
- general credit – tick ‘Yes’ in the RPL section of the applicant portal to have your application assessed for general credit.
- credit for specific units – to have specific units from your previous course assessed, complete and submit the RPL application form (available in the applicant portal) at the same time as your course application.
You will need to upload your supporting documents to be considered for RPL. If you're admitted into a course at Deakin, your credit entitlement will be confirmed with your offer, or as soon as possible afterwards.
Once all your supporting documents have been uploaded, review and submit your application.

What happens next?
Once you've submitted your application, we'll email you a receipt number. Depending on the course, you may be contacted for additional documentation or information. Usually, notification of your application outcome will be emailed to you within 10 working days, though some applications may take longer to assess. If you're successful, you'll receive a Letter of Offer with instructions on how to accept your offer and enrol.

Currently studying at TAFE?
Moving from TAFE to university can be a seamless next step. Study with one of Deakin’s TAFE partners and you may receive guaranteed entry into the second year of a Deakin degree, or receive recognition of prior learning for eligible TAFE, Deakin College and Deakin associate degree qualifications.
The pathway between the Diploma of Laboratory Technology and a Bachelor of Science enabled me to gain hands-on practical skills and guaranteed entry into university. I really enjoyed all the pracs at TAFE and am now building on this knowledge at Deakin.

Yes. There are conditions that you need to meet, such as having already completed six months of study at your original university. We recommend visiting the Study Australia website and also the Australian Government Immigration and citizenship site for the most current information.
No. We offer credit for what you’ve already completed at your current university so if you’re transferring to a similar course, it won’t slow you down. And because we have three intakes each year, you might even be able to start earlier.
We recommend completing your TAFE course and then applying to Deakin. If you’re coming from one of our TAFE partners, you can jump into the second year of your Deakin course with guaranteed recognition of prior learning (RPL). If you’re coming from a different TAFE, we’ll assess your RPL application.
Yes. If you’re not satisfied with your current provider or course, you can transfer to Deakin. We welcome postgraduate students from other universities and may offer RPL for relevant study you’ve already completed.
